Sept 10-12, 2010: Doshu Seminar at Aikido de la Montagne [Montreal]

Instructor:  Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba and Yoshimitsu Yamada Shihan
Concentration: Aikido
Attending from Peachtree: Blue Spruell and Brian Potter

Sensei and Brian Potter attended the seminar with Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba in Montreal this past weekend.  Doshu is the grandson of O'Sensei, Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido.  It had been 18 years since he last taught in Montreal.  Blue said it was a real pleasure to see him again and that Doshu focused on basic Aikido techniques in all of his classes.  "He has very clean technique and his openings are exact  regardless of the attack."  The seminar was attended by over 500 students representing over 100 different dojos from around the world.  "It was great to see so many friends in one place for such a rare event," Blue said.  "We owe a lot to Berthiaume Sensei and Aikido de la Montagne in Montreal for hosting it so well."

Brian Potter:  Montreal’s a great place to visit, and this trip was no exception.  Cloudless skies with highs in the 70’s every day.  Practice was awesome.  I had never seen Doshu before, let alone shared an elevator with him.  His classes focused on basics, and were surprisingly aerobic.  Yamada sensei never disappoints, and my difficulty typing this note tells me that Blue’s nikkyo is improving.  There were well over 500 people on the mat, representing most of the Western Hemisphere of the planet.  Very cool, indeed!

Food in Montreal is an experience all to itself.  The bone marrow was awesome, and we enjoyed our regular favorite, Au Pied du Cochon, for multiple foie gras items.  After a couple of 10,000 calorie meals, it was nice to head back to the hotel to watch a 10 foot projection of our favorite movies.  All very fun…can’t wait for Winter Camp.
