Sciatica flareup

ETA:

Funny enough I was able to get a video appointment with an urgent care doctor (my insurance has it): they gave me a steroid taper and I’ll start that and the suggestions for ice and stretching. Thanks for reading and sorry for causing trouble.

Hello friends: happy May.

Has anyone else in the dojo dealt with sciatica? For context I had back surgery 6 years ago, a fusion at L4-5 due to herniated disc. After a few months I was pain free and have remained so 98%.

I started a desk job three weeks ago and my sciatica pain has flared up again on the right side. I haven’t been to class this week because of it but I don’t want to fall behind (well, as far behind as a rank beginner like myself can be!).

I’m using some treatments I used before (ultimately conservative treatments failed so I wound up with surgery).

I really like aikido but of course don’t want to cause more damage. Has anyone else here dealt with sciatica while doing a martial art? Thanks :)

Since November, I’ve been dealing with sciatica symptoms. Pills didn’t really help much - Pilates exercises, time, and minimizing training helped the most. Because of these issues, I haven’t been able to train much lately - my body just doesn’t allow it right now.

It’s essential not to sit for more than an hour without getting up, and not to walk for more than an hour without taking a break or doing a gentle warm-up. During flare-ups, it’s best to avoid twisting movements, squats, aikido stances, rolls, and stretching through pain; instead, opt for very gentle stretching.

I’ve been taking Celecoxib as prescribed by my doctor. You could also ask your doctor about a steroid injection. I had one three days ago after a greater trochanter contusion from a hard throw in aikido. Maybe some of this information will help you.
